A New Covenant

Michigan Conference of the United Church of Christ

Dear Friend of the Conference!

At our 2016 Annual Meeting in Flint, Dr. Jennifer Harvey challenged us to pursue a new covenant that included three bold witnesses on behalf of racial justice in the United States:

  • Educating ourselves about under-told U.S. histories of people of color.
  • Supporting local racial justice initiatives throughout Michigan.
  • Acting in solidarity with those seeking liberty and justice.

In addition, Rev. Dr. Nicholas Hood III called upon the Michigan Conference to design and lead programs of relationship building among our diverse congregations. His clarion call urged a new covenant of understanding that could be a model in our denomination.

We are writing to let you know that the Michigan Conference has heard the challenge and the call. This new covenant of witness and relationship building will help frame our mission and ministry in the coming months and years. As with any covenant, it is not a solitary endeavor; we need your partnership and involvement with these efforts.

  • If you are a member of a UCC church in Michigan, can you encourage your congregation to include or increase funding in its annual budget for Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM)? This is the primary funding source for all that happens at the Conference and National Setting (i.e. staffing, programs, sharing of resources and missional support).
  • If you want to support the Conference’s strategic 2020 Vision initiatives and the focus on healing the racial divide, will you consider making a personal donation to help fund this work?
  • If you are not able to offer financial support, will you consider making prayers for the Michigan Conference and the United Church of Christ a part of your daily prayer discipline?

We know that you have a lot of choices for your charitable giving. We simply invite you to prayerfully consider how Friends of the Conference support makes a difference in your home congregation and around the world. You may donate in a couple of ways: Mail a check made out to “Michigan Conference” with “Friends of the Conference” in the MEMO line; or you may wait until “Giving Tuesday,” November 29th , and donate online at the Michigan Conference website, www.michucc.org. Thank you in advance for being a part of this new covenant in Michigan!

Sincerely,

Karen Holcomb-Merrill                                               Campbell Lovett
