Systematic Training for Effective Ministries

A joint ministry of the Michigan Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the
Michigan Conference United Church of Christ

As members of the Body of Christ, we are all called to ministry. Each of us has gifts, known or yet to be discovered, to use in furthering the mission of Christ's Church. S.T.E.M. was founded in 1982 to help members of DOC and UCC churches discover and develop their gifts for leadership and service.  Students are challenged to reflect on their faith, to be open to new insights and perspectives, and to claim their ministry roles as part of the Body of Christ.

The STEM mission statement:

STEM's mission is "to equip lay leaders, Christian educators, and licensed and commissioned ministers to carry out their varied ministries through Biblical study, spiritual formation and by developing leadership Skills."

Those interested in expanding their spiritual lives and developing leadership skills may enroll in any Lay Leadership Development STEM workshop, or if called to pastoral ministry, a lay leader may enroll as a full-time or part- time student, joining the Licensed/Commissioned Ministry Program.

Lay Leadership Development Workshops:
Lay Leadership Development Workshops are designed for lay members and lay leaders who are interested in exploring their faith and in gaining new skills for leadership within the church.  Workshops are designed to address current topics and needs of the lay leadership in our churches.  Topics will vary from year to year.  Workshops will be offered at different locations throughout Michigan.  Lay leaders will be able to enroll individually for as many workshops as fit their needs.

Licensed/Commissioned Ministry Program:
A five-year program for training and nurturing Lay Leaders who feel Gods call to specialized pastoral ministry.  The LCMP will help students discern their own gifts for ministry, develop and deepen their own theology, and gain practical skills for pastoral ministry.  Students must attend 8 classes for 4 years, complete a number of written and preaching assignments, and attend a History and Polity class for their denomination.

A call to ministry requires discernment both by the individual, the local church, and the wider church.  Those interested in Licensed/Commissioned Ministry should meet with their pastor and with the appropriate authorizing body before applying to the LCMP.  Authorization for ministry comes from either the United Church of Christ Association Committees on Church and Ministry or the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Commission on Ministry.  The STEM Licensed/Commissioned Ministry Program operates in communication with these authorizing bodies.

The STEM Licensed/Commissioned Ministry Program is a training program. It does not authorize you to be a licensed/commissioned minister.

Tuition for the Licensed Ministry Program is $1200 each year for six (6) Licensed Ministry courses. Housing and meals are extra. Any costs for elective hours are borne by the student. Students are encouraged to seek scholarships from their local churches and their association or region. UCC students in Covenant association are encouraged to apply to the Elvira Vogel Fund.

If you are wondering if S.T.E.M. is right for you, you are welcome to take one core class or several classes of interest to you without entering the program.  Classes are open to all interested parties without further obligation and prerequisite: Individual class tuition is $150 each.
