Discerning Ministry

Have you heard God's call to ministry in the United Church of Christ? Discernment of that call is done in community with your local congregation, your Association's Church and Ministry Committee and your Conference. Whether you are just thinking about entering seminary or a ministry training program or if you are an ordained person in another denomination seeking standing in the United Church of Christ, you must be a member of a local congregation and then contact your local Association's Church and Ministry Committee about becoming a Member in Discernment.

  • Find your local Association's Church and Ministry Committee Chairperson. The Southwest Association has created a *Member in Discernment Manual available in PDF and Word formats.
  • The Marks of Faithful and Effective Ministers will be used to aid in your discernment process. Read them, explore this assessment rubric and the "Journaling the Journey" resource (the Conference office has a few copies available for sale - please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. • A Course in the History and Polity of the United Church of Christ is usually required by your local Church and Ministry Committee. Check the Michigan Conference Calendar for offerings in the Conference office, as well as online and in person courses offered through these seminaries and organizations:

The UCC offers the course at its biennial General Synod gathering in odd numbered years.
